From Baie de GaspÁ© to the Canso Canal

We spent a couple of wonderful days in the Baie de GaspÁ© where we took time to explore the Forillon National Park, one of the many stunning parks Canada has to offer. Among other trails, we hiked the Mount Alban trail (don't be fooled by the name, we're only talking about 900 ft elevation gain) which started right off of our anchorage. The first couple of miles made for fairly steep going, but once we reached the observation tower we were swept up by the exceptional beauty of the sea and cliffs below.

Looking at the calendar and the wind forecast, we made the tough decision to skip Cape Breton (great hiking!) and Lake Bras d’Or (sailor’s playground). Unfortunately there is just not enough time left for all the beautiful places along the way.

Considering the wind forecast it seemed to be best to do two overnight trips from Baie de GaspÁ© via the Magdalen Islands to the Canso Canal which were about 150 miles each. The Strait of Canso separates Cape Breton Island from the mainland of Nova Scotia, providing a shortcut to the eastern coast and the first glimpse of the wide open Atlantic Ocean.

And there we were immediately greeted by the famous Nova Scotia fog- thick, cold and wet!
