Follow the beat of St. Thomas Carnival

The vibrant energy of St. Thomas comes alive during the annual Carnival, with festive music, dancing in the streets and a parade of colorful costumes.

The first St. Thomas Carnival was held in 1912 when the island was part of the Danish West Indies. The festivities included traditions that continue today, including masquerade “mas” bands, adorned with elaborate costumes and accompanied by dance troupes and floats,, parades and carnival queens. A second carnival was held in 1914, but it would be another 38 years before St. Thomas hosted another. In 1952, the Carnival tradition was reintroduced by Ron de Lugo, the USVI's first and longest serving delegate to the U.S. Congress. Since then, St. Thomas has been transformed into a whirlwind of color, music and revelry every April for Carnival.

Anchored in Charlotte Amalie Harbor, we had a prime spot to watch and, as we later found out the hard way, listen to the array of carnival activities.

It started with the boat races on April 28, when speedboats of all sizes raced along the waterfront. But what fascinated us more was the incredible number of motor boats tied up along the shore with music blaring from the speakers and crowds of people partying. The walkway behind the jetty was lined with food and drink vendors, and all sorts of carnival trinkets and handicrafts were on sale, such as clothes made with the vibrant patterns of madras fabric, bird feeders made from coconut shells, handmade dolls, jewelry and art. Carnival Week got off to a great start.

The next day was the opening of the Carnival Village, the heart of the St. Thomas Carnival. A variety of carnival rides and the large stage have been set up during the last few days. The Carnival Village is also home to the local food fair, which serves up authentic island fare like fried fish, callaloo stew and coconut cakes. My personal favorite was the saltfish pate, a saltfish filling wrapped in a perfectly fried batter. I could have eaten it for breakfast, lunch and dinner – delicious!

Around 7 p.m., the first of six free (!) reggae, Latin fusion and calypso concerts began with a lineup of headline acts that captivated the crowd and kept the energy high, including Caribbean superstars Shaggy, Patrice Roberts and Machel Montano.

People enjoyed the pulse of the music, dancing, singing and just having a great time. Every evening for the next six days until 1 am in the morning! Having dropped anchor about half a mile from the Carnival Village, we had the pleasure – like it or not – of listening to the blaring music and cheering crowds for the next six nights. Well, what can you do, so let's paaarty!!!!

Let's paaaartyyyy!
