Beautiful Maine

Have you ever wondered if Acadia National Park in Maine is worth a visit? The answer is a resounding YES!!! With rugged cliffs of granite along the coast and miles of forested trails, this 47,000 acre Maine gem is the perfect place for nature enthusiasts.

Our base was Bar Harbor, a very touristy town on the east side of Mt. Desert Island and also a popular destination for large cruise ships.

We spent three days there and thanks to the very extensive bus service, The Island Express, were able to see quite a bit of this awesome park. The Island Express left from Bar Harbor, a short dinghy ride from our anchorage, and dropped us off at our desired trailheads. We hiked several trails allowing us to experience the various features of the park – ocean view, rocky coastline, panoramic views of Mt. Desert Island, Mt. Cadillac and the outlying islands.

By the way, for once we didn't mind all the lobster pots around us. When the fishermen came to retrieve their traps, Hans asked if they would sell us a couple of lobsters and we got them for $6/piece!!!!

Our next stop was Buckle Island, a whimsical island with lots of fairy houses and an unusual feature on the trail, a door. What we will also remember the island for is the beach where we foraged for mussels for the first time – enough for dinner that night. There were several other boats in the anchorage and we organized a little pre-dinner bonfire at the beach.

Lately the prevailing winds unfortunately were from the southwest, basically the direction we were going. Needless to say that we were very happy when we had a day in between with a steady wind from ENE, between 10 and 15 knots. We flew our spinnaker and despite the rainy day, enjoyed seven hours of beautiful downwind sailing.
