The port of entry is Meldrum Bay on the western tip of Manitoulin Island. Per instructions, only Hans, the captain, leaves the boat and deals with all formalities. After answering a few questions (Weapons? Drugs?), he gets the registration number which means we're legal in Canada and are proudly hoisting the Canadian courtesy flag.

Canada welcomes us with a stiff breeze, first 20-30 knots, later piping up to 42 knots. That brings us back to not putting too much trust in the weather forecast 🙂 It's not a problem at first as we have the wind from behind and we're making good speed. But we are wondering how it will feel once we will turn into the bay where we have picked an anchorage for the night and will have the wind on the beam. In preparation, we reduce the sail area but it's still not pretty. When we arrive at our anchorage, we are greeted by white caps! Very unexpected. So instead of anchoring, we decide to tie up to the little government dock. Wind and waves make it difficult for Hans to get the boat close enough to the dock for me to throw a line around a cleat.

This is when I see a truck approach the pier. A guy gets out, walks down the pier and signals to throw him the line. Boy, is he a gift sent from heaven! It still takes quite a while until we're tied up and we finally have a chance to introduce ourselves to our savior. He had seen us come into the bay from his house and, being a sailor himself, knew what we were up to, hopped in his truck to come to help us. This is Canadian hospitality at its best! We ask Randy to stay for a beer but he declines as he already has dinner waiting on the grill.

What a pleasant surprise when he comes back a little later with his wife, Lori. We share a drink, some snacks, and, most of all, lots of stories. Randy, thank you once again for your help!!!

O Canada!

PÁ¤sse – check!

Impfausweise – check!

Bootspapiere – check!

Randy, nochmals vielen Dank fÁ¼r deine Hilfe!!!

O Canada

Passports – check

Vaccination cards – check

Boat Papers – check

Q Flag – Check

Yes, for the first time we are entering a foreign country by boat.
