We keep having a nice breeze of sustained 15-20 kts, sometimes increasing to 25-30 kts from the southwest which makes for a great downwind sail.<\/p>
<\/p>
We stop in Kingston, Ontario at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River for some sightseeing and excellent gelato and then continue down the river. We enjoy the beautiful scenery of the 1,000 Islands area which does remind us a lot of the North Channel. It is amazing how many people fulfill their dream of living on their own island. Sometimes it is just a big rock with one tree and a cabin, other times it is a large island with a beautiful mansion, boathouse and private harbor. <\/p>
But there are also a lot of state or city owned islands for the general public to enjoy. This area is a playground for pleasure boaters and as it is a weekend, all types of watercraft are zipping and zooming in any direction. <\/p>
<\/p>
While we have technically been in the St. Lawrence Seaway since we started our trip as, in its broadest sense, the St. Lawrence Seaway is extending some 2,340 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the head of the Great Lakes, it seems to us as if entering the St. Lawrence River is the actual beginning. The portion of the St. Lawrence Seaway from Iroquois (Ontario) to Montreal (Quebec) includes 7 locks, enabling ships to navigate between the Lake Ontario and the lower St. Lawrence River.<\/p>
<\/p>
Together, the locks make up a spectacular lift system. Ships measuring up to 740 feet and 78 feet in the beam are routinely raised to more than 590 feet above sea level, as high as a 60-story building. <\/p>
A lock fills with approximately 24 million gallons in just 7 to 10 minutes. Getting through a lock takes about 45 minutes.<\/p>
<\/p>
We reach the first of the seven locks on July 24. You can book and pay for the transit online – it's about $20 for each lock. <\/p>
As we are going down the river, the two of us can handle the locks quite well. Some have a floating bollard around which you loosely wrap a line to help you stay close to the wall when the boat is being lowered, in other locks you are being handed two long lines that accomplish the same. <\/p>
One of the challenges of going through the lock system is timing. Each lock only opens twice a day for pleasure boats, once in the morning, once in the afternoon, but you don't know the exact time until the morning of your booked transit at about 7:30am. Having to take Hans' work schedule into consideration, makes for tricky planning.<\/p>
<\/p>
I don't know why we thought that we won't be able to sail much on the St. Lawrence River, but so far we have been greatly mistaken. Motoring has been limited to the areas around locks and where shallow water requires us to stay in the shipping channel. The river sometimes widens to the size of a lake, with little communities on either shore and very few industrial buildings. With the winds continuing to blow out of the southwest, we actually get hours of fantastic sailing in with speeds between 7-8 knots and sometimes even over 9 knots! Ok, maybe the current sometimes helps a little bit as well ;)<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

<\/p>
pxl_20220722_133346029.mp-collage.jpg<\/p>
Traveling the St. Lawrence Seaway<\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
After leaving Toronto, the gods of the winds mean us well.
