Going downbound, for us it means the beginning of stronger currents after leaving the last of the seven locks. We experience this right away during our first anchoring attempt. In the location we pick first, currents come from various directions, sometimes over 5kts strong, which prevents the anchor from setting quickly enough and so it keeps dragging. We pick our second anchorage option which ends up being the much better choice – a little more protected, current only in one direction at only 2.5 kts. A perfect place for a perfect night – fireworks with the Montreal skyline in the background included.<\/p>
<\/p>
On July 28, we tie up at the day dock in the Marina Port d'Escale, downtown Montreal, for a few hours of sightseeing. We come across the Poutine Fest and get our first taste of this Canadian national dish. You are wondering what Poutine is???? It is a dish of french fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy. It emerged in Quebec, in the late 1950s in the Centre-du-QuÁ©bec region, though its exact origins are uncertain and there are several competing claims regarding its invention. Wherever it is from, it sure is incredibly high in total fat and is probably going to clog our arteries. But whatever, we go whole hog and order the version topped with popcorn chicken, bacon, and honey-mustard sauce. And boy, it was well worth it.<\/p>
<\/p>
Shortly after leaving Montreal, we get caught in a squall with winds topping 60kts and a massive downpour that reduces the visibility to maybe 150 ft. Nothing a Poutine-filled stomach can't handle though! But as rain is followed by sunshine, we are being rewarded with a beautiful rainbow.<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
Montreal<\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
Du willst wissen, was Poutine ist????
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

<\/p>
pxl_20220728_023215064.mp-collage-1-.jpg<\/p>
Montreal<\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
Montreal marks the beginning or the end of the lower St. Lawrence Seaway, depending on which direction you're going.
