While it was cloudy when we left Tadoussac to cross to the southern shore of the St. Lawrence River, it was at nice and clear . We even saw several seals on our way out! Maybe half an hour later we were surrounded by heavy, soupy fog. GPS, AIS and radar were invaluable in helping us find our way and “see”\u009d who and what was around us. Thank goodness this didn’t last too long and we ended up having a great sail under jib, main and mizzen with 16 kts of wind and speeds up to 8.7 knts.<\/p>
The next day greets us with sunshine and blue skies. We were able to enjoy a whole day of beautiful downwind sailing using the spinnaker. Light winds, up to 10 kts with speeds up to 4.5 kts. It was so relaxing to see the land glide silently past us and only to hear the lapping of the waves against the hull. In the end we covered only 38 nm that day, but those were absolutely beautiful!<\/p>
Initially, the following day was kind of a repeat until the winds got lighter and lighter, changing direction all the time and eventually just dying altogether. As we had a destination in mind, we begrudgingly started the engine and motored the rest of the way.<\/p>
While the next leg of the trip started with moderate winds (13-20 kts), a gale warning was issued half way into our planned distance for the day and we soon had sustained winds of 30 knots, gusting to 37. With waves increasing to 9ft, it felt like being in a washing machine. <\/p>
So we cut the trip short and took shelter in Chloridorme Harbor where we ran into Bernice and Eldon from Quebec again who did the same thing! <\/p>
That evening we saw lots of people on the pier and went to check out what was going on. They were there to fish for mackerels and boy, were they successful. Having up to five hooks on a line, they pulled out multiple fish at a time and their buckets were filled to the brim. In hindsight I’m thinking that we should have given it a try as well – grilled mackerel doesn’t sound bad after all. Check out the picture "tailgating the Canadian way"! :)<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
Man weiss nie, was einen erwartet<\/strong><\/em><\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

<\/p>
pxl_20220805_210842530.mp-collage.jpg<\/p>
You never know what to expect<\/strong><\/em><\/p>
Conditions on the water can be strikingly different from day to day.
