When you approach the island, you are greeted by insanely beautiful water of all shades of blue and turquoise and a probably two mile long crescent shaped beach. It only took us about three and a half hours from Cape Santa Maria to the northwest anchorage of Conception Island. <\/p>
<\/p>
The cruising guide described the Southampton Reef to the north in glowing colors and a fellow boater who we had met in George Town some weeks before pointed out where we had to go and how to best get there with the dinghy. Within no time we had our swimsuits on and our snorkel gear ready and off we went. Our impression was a little disappointing. While there were some nice corals, there weren't a lot of fish. We had been in areas where fish were way more plentiful than here. We tried a slightly different spot a couple of days later after having watched other people go out with their dinghies, but were even less impressed. As we had read a lot of raving reviews about this reef, we can only assume that we picked the wrong spots, who knows.<\/p>
<\/p>
A definite highlight was the sighting of a dolphin when we were riding our dinghy out of the anchorage. He came really close and started to play with us. Swam from the left to the right, went ahead a little bit, turned around as if to say "Are you coming?". He was so close, we could have almost touched him. Unfortunately we don't have any pictures of this occurrence. My phone was in the underwater case and as it was my first time using it, I had the pointer on the menu instead of the trigger. And of course I only noticed that after the dolphin quit playing. <\/p>
Rats! <\/p>
<\/p>
Another "must-do" on Conception Island is a dinghy ride to and through the mangrove creek. It serves as a nursery for turtles and sharks. The water in the creek was a little milky so we couldn't see details, but there definitely was an abundance of turtles to be found as well as a few sharks. Quite amazing!<\/p>
We used the evenings to plan our next steps towards the Dominican Republic. It looked as if a good weather window presented itself, and using "The Gentleman's Guide to Passages South", we mapped the route for the next few days.<\/p>
<\/p>
At 6am on Saturday morning we were ready to weigh anchor and be underway to Rum Cay. After getting about three quarters of the anchor chain up, our windlass quit working! We had noticed during the last few days that it made a weird grinding noise when using it, but hoped it'll last until we get to LuperÁ³n where we would have enough time to check it out, repair it or – worst case scenario – look for a replacement. Obviously the windlass decided not to work for that long and so we pulled up the remaining chain as well as the anchor by hand. Hans definitely got his upper body workout that day! <\/p>
While sailing out of the anchorage we debated how to deal with this new situation. Continuing our journey without a working windlass was entirely out of the question, and so there was only one good option – going back to George Town. This being a safe harbor, we could stay for as long as it would take to repair the windlass or fly in a replacement. Guess the Dominican Republic will have to wait a little longer!<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Conception Island<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>
- another slice of paradise.
