The recommended route is to Sandbore Channel, through the Caicos Banks and then down to LuperÁ³n from Big Sand Cay. The Caicos Banks are very shallow and peppered with coral heads, so you best not cross at night or in inclement weather. So either way the trip cannot be done without at least stopping once for the night. There is conflicting information regarding clearance procedures. Some say you can call immigrations and ask for permission to spend a night to rest without having to clear in, some say you can spend multiple nights without formally having to check in, others say that you can get into trouble when doing this, even get your boat confiscated.

Had we been able to cross through Turks&Caicos with one or two overnights, we probably would have asked for permission to anchor a night or two, but the forecast suggested that we will have to spend several nights between getting to the islands and our final leg to LuperÁ³n and we therefore opted to check in at Southside Marina in Providenciales.

It was a really nice sail down to Provo, but from there on the winds were just not in our favor, and we ended up bashing into up to 18 knot winds and 2-3 ft waves while motoring across the banks. Not pleasant at all! But it would have been worse had we waited a couple of days. We anchored twice before finally getting to Cockburn Harbour on South Caicos. Here we planned to wait for the weather to turn favorable for our final leg down to LuperÁ³n. We spent the time strolling through town with our buddy boat friends Arlo and Iris as well as the crew of another boat also heading south..

Until the 1960s South Caicos was an important center of regional trade and a major exporter of salt. Today its main industry is small-scale fishing focused on conch and spiny lobster exports. A variety of historic structures, including the Queen's Parade Grounds, an old Wesleyan Church, the 18th-century Commissioner's House, the old saltworks and the boiling hole that fed them can be found in the town. The abandoned salt pans just outside town have become the home of a number of bird species including large flocks of flamingos. Unfortunately there is not much of the former splendor left and a lot of buildings are in a dilapidated state. While the Turks&Caicos are well known for their spectacular scuba diving sites, it didn't look as if this area is well frequented by tourists. The only resort we could walk to looked very empty and not well kept.

One day we spent some time snorkeling the 'Admiral's Aquarium', consisting of a group of coral heads where we saw lots of small reef fish and a couple of barracudas. The water here is as unbelievable as it was in the Bahamas, just fascinating!

We've yet to see any humpback whales that are supposed to be in that area on their way to their breeding grounds near SamanÁ¡ in the Dominican Republic. I guess we'll go ashore today armed with our binoculars, sit on the cliffs and be on the lookout for them. Or maybe we'll see some on our way down to LuperÁ³n in a couple of days.

The Turks & Caicos

We finally left Abraham's Bay on Mayaguana on our way to LuperÁ³n, via the Turks & Caicos.
