Instead of having 4 6V 100Ah deep cycle lead acid batteries, we have 4x 225Ah batteries. That's plenty of power for our current needs, although we're not running the freezer right now. So far there has been no need to run the generator as the solar panels provide enough power to keep the batteries charged.

What do we do if we need medical attention? We have medical insurance that covers us worldwide except for the United States and all US territories. In these areas we are only covered for medical emergencies. Fortunately, we did nt have to see any doctors so far, but I did need some follow-up on the health issues I dealt with in the spring of 2022.

My plan was to take care of everything when we went back to Germany for six weeks this summer. Due to my father's unexpected passing, we won't be going now. So before we left in April, I was calling around trying to get appointments during our time in Germany. Of course, that was not enough notice and they could not squeeze me in.

The alternative was to find doctors here in the Dominican Republic. With the help of Iris (did I mention she's fluent in Spanish?) I made two appointments for May 8th in Santiago, about an hour south of LuperÁ³n.

The weekend before going there, we spent some time removing the old windlass and preparing to install the new one. But there was also time to relax. We hung out with other cruisers and – courtesy of Iris – went to a beauty salon to get our hair washed. What an experience! The water was scooped out of a barrel and poured over my head, giving me an unexpected but not unpleasant shower in this hot weather. Iris then had our motoconcho driver get some beer and wine and we enjoyed a drink while getting our hair dried.

On Monday we took a taxi to Santiago. The driver stayed with us all day and took us to all the places we needed to go.

While Iris and I went to the hospital, Hans went looking for batteries and a machine shop where they could make an adaptor plate to mount our new anchor winch.

Fortunately, the doctors I saw both spoke very good English and communication was not a problem. What fascinated me was that they wrote orders for an ultrasound, a mammogram and a tomogram and I was able to get everything done that very day!

Five hours later, the taxi picked us up and before picking up the mounting plate, we went to a large grocery store.

A chance to once again choose from a large assortment.

Twelve hours later we were back in LuperÁ³n. The fare for the whole day was $70, no reason to complain.

On Thursday afternoon, a weather window opened up to continue our journey east along the north coast of the Dominican Republic toward SamanÁ¡, our next stop. So Hans and Arlo installed the new windlass while Iris and I prepared the boats for the passage. After so many weeks at the mooring, there was a lot of stuff to stow and I also wanted to prepare a meal for the night passage. It was finally time to say goodbye to LuperÁ³n!

Was fÁ¼r ein Erlebnis!

Getting ready to say good-bye to LuperÁ³n

First, I need to make a correction to the last post.
