Los Haitises, which means "hilly land" in the Taino language, boasts a spectacular series of 30-meter (98-foot) rock formations jutting out of the water and extensive mangroves along its bay, which is dotted with cayes that are home to numerous bird colonies, as well as a series of caves known for having one of the highest numbers of petroglyphs and pictographs in the country.<\/p>
Los Haitises is located on the south side of SamanÁ¡ Bay. With 10-12 mph winds we have a leisurely sail on a beam reach until the wind dies down and we motor the remaining 5 miles of the 14 mile trip. We drop anchor in an absolutely beautiful anchorage that we have all to ourselves, a common theme for the next two nights. We get the dinghy ready and explore the coastline and some of the mangrove rivers. That afternoon and the following day we explored some of the caves. They impressed us with their Taino murals as well as their sheer size. The next two days we enjoyed short sails along the scenic coastline, a hike through the rainforest, and the water inviting us to cool off after the heat of the day.<\/p>
While one could spend weeks in this remote area, we headed back to SamanÁ¡ on Sunday to get ready for a day trip to Santo Domingo.<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
Los Haitises Nationalpark<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

<\/p>
pxl_20230525_214938046.portrait.original-collage.jpg<\/p>
Los Haitises National Park<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
Covering an area of 1,600 km\u00b2 (618 square miles), Los Haitises National Park is one of the crown jewels of the Dominican Republic's national park system.
