And while we got a lot of work done, we also had lots of fun discovering some of the things this island has to offer.<\/p>
<\/p>
When the boatyard offered a tour to the Caroni Swamp, the second largest mangrove wetland in Trinidad and Tobago, we immediately signed up. The Caroni Swamp is an estuarine system consisting of 5,611 acres of mangrove forest and herbaceous marsh, interspersed with numerous channels and brackish and saline lagoons. The wetland provides a variety of habitats for plant and animal species and as such supports a rich biodiversity. <\/p>
The central portion of the property is designated as a wildlife sanctuary and is home to one of Trinidad and Tobago's national birds, the Scarlet Ibis. <\/p>
<\/p>
During the tour on one of the flat-bottomed boats, the guide pointed out some of the animals that call the swamp home, such as caimans and swamp boas, but the main attraction, of course, was watching the ritual roosting of thousands of the bright red birds as the sun set. <\/p>
At first, small groups of scarlet ibises could be seen, but eventually larger groups returned from their daytime shrimp feeding. More and more came and all were landing in the trees on the island, which looked as if they were sprouting red flowers, a stunning sight.<\/p>
The Caroni Swamp is protected under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Although officially protected as a bird sanctuary, the population of the Scarlet Ibis has declined significantly since 1970 and continues to be threatened by poaching and pollution of the river and gulf. It is our sincere hope that further conservation efforts will help protect the Scarlet Ibis and ensure that future generations will be able to witness this magnificent daily roosting ritual.<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

There's more to Trinidad than boatwork – The Caroni Swamp<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
All in all, we spent three and a half weeks in Trinidad.
