This source provides a continuous – though not inexhaustible – replenishment of the asphalt, which is in slow but constant movement beneath the thick surface "skin". Areas excavated during the pitch harvesting process are replenished within hours, again due to the constant movement of the asphalt. <\/p>
<\/p>
We had a fabulous guide, Carl, who patiently explained the history and economic importance of the lake. He showed us where to walk safely and where we would be sinking. The surface yielded only slightly as we walked, although Carl told us that a car would sink in fairly quickly.<\/p>
<\/p>
When Sir Walter Raleigh came to Trinidad in 1595, the locals showed him the Pitch Lake and how the tar would help him caulk his boat. The tar has been actively mined for many years and the asphalt collected has been used in roads and airport runways around the world.<\/p>
<\/p>
The lake is constantly sucking things in, almost like a slow-motion black hole. There are veins radiating out from the main lake, and buildings that were too close to one of them have begun to sink.<\/p>
<\/p>
Flora and fauna also thrive in the natural surroundings of the Pitch Lake. Cashew trees encircle the lake and mango and breadfruit trees are plentiful. Plant species such as water rose, nymph Lilies and bird of paradise grow in abundance. The Lake is also a bird watcher’s paradise so herons are everywhere along with Humming Birds, Sandpipers, Kingfishers and Ospreys, just to name a few.<\/p>
<\/p>
Bottom line, the Pitch Lake, being the largest of only five such lakes in the world, was a fascinating experience and definitely worth a visit.<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>

There's More to Trinidad Than Boat Work – The La Brea Pitch Lake<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
For this trip, we rented a car and, with Arlo in tow, drove to Pitch Lake in southwest Trinidad in the village of La Brea.<\/p>
<\/p>
Pitch Lake is one of the most unusual environments in the world – a solid "lake" that you […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4675","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4675","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4675"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4675\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4675"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4675"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sailingmakaan.com\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4675"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
