Sailing was good until we got into the lee of St. Vincent, where the wind shifted from easterly to north-northwest and dropped to 6 knots. It took us about two hours under engine to find steady winds of 17-20 knots from the east-northeast and we were sailing at a comfortable close reach. We even saw 3 dolphins – so exciting! Around ten in the morning the wind shifted a bit more to the northeast and we tried to tack towards the anchorage where we finally arrived at 14:21 on December 12th. <\/p>
We spent a day in this beautiful anchorage and left for Fort de France on December 14th.<\/p>
The next day we took the bus to the AimÁ© Cesaire International Airport to pick up my mother who would be joining us for the next three and a half weeks. She had always hoped to join us on our trip and now it was finally happening.<\/p>
<\/p>
Our first destination was St. Pierre, which we arrived at after a spirited but comfortable sail with winds up to 25 knots and two reefs in the main. As is often the case in the lee of the islands, there are periods of very light wind, this time around 5 knots, and so we needed the engine for the last hour of the trip, which we used to turn on the watermaker.<\/p>
<\/p>
We already wrote about Martinique when we visited the island in August 2023 in our post – aptly named – Martinique – The Island of Coming Back. And here we are again.<\/p>
<\/p>
Of course we took a walk to the Depaz Distillery where Hans stocked up on his favorite rum, strolled through town looking at the ruins left by the 1902 volcanic eruption, and enjoyed a superbe rum punch and fish dinner at Restaurant 1902, which allowed us to enjoy the beautiful view of the anchorage with a gorgeous sunset.<\/p>
<\/p>
This time we also went to the Zoo de Martinique, an attraction we skipped last time but were so glad we did this time. <\/p>
The zoo is set in an enchanting setting of tropical plants, a waterfall and the ruins of the old Latouche sugar plantation, dating back to 1643.Along the way, visitors can enjoy a variety of animals, including monkeys, jaguars, pumas, lorikeets and flamingos, and stroll past the remains of buildings and lots of old sugar mills equipment with information about the machinery and process of growing and processing sugar on the island.<\/p>
The fantastic location of the zoo, amidst the ruins of a once bustling city that was completely destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1902, is surprising and unique in the world. Definitely worth a visit.<\/p>
<\/p>
For Christmas we went down to Le Marin where we planned to meet Eric and Heike again and spend Christmas Eve together. We enjoyed a dinner of goulash and spÁ¤tzle with yummy Christmas cookies for dessert.<\/p>
Two days later we celebrated Eric's birthday. His friend Herbert, whom we met in Grenada, used to be a cook and made the most delicious chicken legs we've ever tasted. The cockpit of "Choupinous" was full of mainly German guests and everyone had a fantastic evening. Many thanks again to the hosts! Before leaving Le Marin, we spent an evening at a local bar dancing and chatting with other sailors, and also visited a newly opened local restaurant, Mami's Ti'Smokehouse, whose German owners, Margareta and Michael, we met at Eric's birthday party, and who serve delicious smoked fish and chicken. They gave up their restaurant in France and moved to Martinique to start this new venture and we wish them all the best and hope that their new business endeavor will be very successful.<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

<\/p>
Martinique Take Two – This Time With A Visitor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
On December 11th around noon we left Bequia and started the 110 nm overnight trip to Anse d'Arlet, our first anchorage in Martinique.
