Around 7 p.m. we were on our way to Christmas Cove on Great St. James Island, southeast of St. Thomas. We mainly use Predict Wind to plan our passage. With the predicted wind, our arrival time was around 6:30 in the morning. As has happened so many times before, we had stronger winds throughout and were able to make much better speed than predicted, despite reducing our sail area. This pushed our arrival time to 4 a.m., still in the middle of the night. Like most sailors, we try to avoid arriving at an anchorage while it is still dark, so we hove-to for a couple of hours to arrive around 7am.

Christmas Cove is a very popular anchorage and it was not surprising that we had to share the cove with about 40 other boats as it's a great place to snorkel from the boat, with lots of fish, turtles, rays and beautiful coral. During the first few snorkeling trips, our new small diving compressor was put to good use, and we were able to take turns admiring the beauty of the underwater world without having to resurface and gasp for air all the time.

Of course, Hans had already tested the compressor in St. Croix. After all, it could have been defective and had to be sent back.

This small diving compressor has a hose about 50 feet long and allows us to experience life below the surface and capture it more easily on camera without the effort and weight of conventional scuba tanks. Yes, the depth is limited, but all we want is to be able to stay underwater and observe for a longer period of time than if we just had to hold our breath.

Both when cleaning the hull and the propeller, which by now had grown an impressive beard, as well as during our first underwater excursions, the little unit convinced us completely. Unlike our previous compressor, it runs on lithium batteries, is much lighter, and can be easily towed by a small floating island. So far we are very happy with our new purchase!

I used a stock photo of our new crew member because I haven't taken a picture of him yet 🙁.

Before continuing on to Charlotte Amelie, the capital of St. Thomas, we stopped at another Buck Island – it seems they ran out of names as there are three Buck Islands in the BVI's and USVI's 🙂. This Buck Island is located about 2 miles (4 km) south of St. Thomas and is surrounded by beautiful coral reef habitats as well as an artificial reef – a shipwreck. The marine area is home to a large variety of fish and animals, especially endangered sea turtles.

In 1969, the 45-acre island was given to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for its "value to migratory birds" and became the Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge. Birdwatchers can see red-billed tropic birds, frigate birds, terns, laughing gulls and other species near the island.

During the day, the bay is buzzing with dive charter boats and the like that swarm the island. The latest entertainment toy is an underwater scooter, a new way to experience the underwater world that anyone with a minimum height of 4 feet, a minimum age of 10 years, and a maximum weight of 350 pounds can enjoy. It was hilarious to watch the bobbing floats indicating where each scooter was strung like pearls on a necklace as they moved through the water.

We spent two days at Buck Island and enjoyed the fact that after the charter boats left for the day, we were the only boat there and all we could hear was the waves crashing against the cliffs and the many birds chirping and screeching – just beautiful!

Approaching St. Thomas

Five days after Anja's departure, we got MAKAAN ready to sail to St. Thomas, the second largest of the USVI's.

We decided to sail the 40 miles to our next destination overnight, spend the day on beautiful Buck Island, St. Croix, and depart from there.
