On the itinerary were a coffee plantation and the history of the Taino people.<\/p>
<\/p>
To get to Sandra's coffee plantation we take a winding road through the lush tropical rainforest of the Kordilleren. <\/p>
<\/p>
While most of the roads are in good condition, the closer we get to the coffee plantation, the worse the roads become, turning into a muddy path that has us wondering if we're still on the right track.<\/p>
<\/p>
When we finally arrive, we are given a tour that starts with an overview of the history of the property and the owners, followed by an explanation of the different types of coffee plants, the picking and drying process while walking around the property. Sandra's farm uses traditional roasting methods in an environmentally friendly way, without using herbicides or pesticides. Puerto Rico's cool mountain climate, with temperatures that can dip into the 40s, is an ideal environment for great coffee. During Hurricane Maria, the coffee plantations in the Adjuntas region were severely damaged, and Sandra's farm is still not back to full production, as it takes several years for a coffee tree to produce. We see the coffee tree flowers, small seedlings and of course the beans themselves. During the tour, our guide also points out a variety of exotic fruits, flowers and spices, all grown by the owners of the farm, and we are encouraged to sample some of them.<\/p>
<\/p>
The tour culminated in a coffee and chocolate tasting on the beautiful veranda overlooking the surrounding mountains and valleys. The coffee is brewed the traditional way using – to our delight – a Melitta coffee filter!<\/p>
To get to our next destination, the Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Site, we continue through mountainous terrain, enjoying the beautiful vistas as we go.<\/p>
<\/p>
At one point we see a large number of rainbow eucalyptus trees. The bark of these trees looks as if an artist equipped with a palette has been at work.<\/p>
The Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Site is the most important TaÁno archaeological site in the Caribbean and offers visitors a unique glimpse into the indigenous cultures that inhabited the region, and in fact most of the Caribbean, during the pre-Columbian era before Spanish colonization. <\/p>
After entering the sprawling park, we follow the music we hear in the distance. When we reach the ceremonial grounds, we see a group of dancers dressed in traditional clothing, singing songs and performing some of the ancient dances to the beat of drums. The park contains 10 "bateys", special courts around which the Caribbean Taino built their settlements and which they used for gatherings, dances and ball games, typically framed by stone monoliths with pretroglyphs.<\/p>
<\/p>
After watching for a while, we begin our drive back to Las Salinas, stopping for a few more attractions along the way. <\/p>
After a truly spectacular day, the last thing left to do is a stop at the supermarket. What a treat! How often do we have the luxury of not having to carry the groceries back to the dinghy?<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
Landausflug in Puerto Rico<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Land Excursion in Puerto Rico<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
During our short stay in Puerto Rico we rented a car and left Las Salinas together with Petra and Bernd from SY Joline to visit the interior of Puerto Rico.
