<p><strong><em>San Nicolas<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>There are few anchorages in Aruba and most boats stay close to Oranjestad and the nearby marina. But we checked out three other anchorages southeast of Oranjestad and the area surrounding them. <\/p><p><\/p><p>From one, a 30-minute walk brought us to San Nicolas, Aruba's second largest city, known for its picturesque Baby Beach and colorful murals and street art.<\/p><p>There are about 50 murals within a three by three block area (80×60 meters per block), with styles ranging from realistic optical illusion to surreal to indigenous techno. There was amazing talent at work here.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Stopping at the San Nicolas Information Center to get a map of the murals, we learn that the Island Fest will be held that evening, a good reason to come back later in the day.<\/p><p><\/p><p>The festival is set up in the middle of historic San Nicolas and offers a variety of attractions including delicious local and multicultural food, live bands and presentations of Aruba's rich culture and history.<\/p><p>A show blending various media – slides, music and dance – brings the heritage and traditions to life, followed by a performance of a small-scale Aruban carnival.<\/p><p>We sample some of the culinary delights and are hooked on the poffertjes, a traditional Dutch sweet that resembles small, fluffy pancakes. <\/p><p>Sitting at one of the tables set up in front of the extensively renovated 1940's Nicolas store, we enjoy a drink, listen to the music and people watch.<\/p><p>As a special surprise, the festival organizers have arranged a drone show. What a colorful way to bring a delightful evening to a close!<\/p><p><\/p><p><\/p><p><\/p><p><strong><em>San Nicolas<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>Es gibt nur wenige AnkerplÁ¤tze in Aruba, und die meisten Boote bleiben in der NÁ¤he von Oranjestad und dem nahe gelegenen Yachthafen. Hier waren schwer talentierte KÁ¼nstler am Werk!<\/p><p><\/p><p>Im Informationszentrum von San Nicolas erhalten wir eine Karte der Wandmalereien und erfahren, dass am Abend das Island Fest stattfindet – ein guter Grund, spÁ¤ter am Tag wiederzukommen.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Das Fest spielt sich mitten im historischen San Nicolas ab und bietet eine Vielzahl von Attraktionen, darunter kÁ¶stliche lokale und multikulturelle Speisen, Live-Bands und PrÁ¤sentationen Á¼ber Arubas reiche Kultur und Geschichte.<\/p><p>Eine Show mit einer Mischung aus verschiedenen Medien – Dias, Musik und Tanz – erweckt das Erbe und die Traditionen zum Leben, gefolgt von einer AuffÁ¼hrung des arubanischen Karnevals in Kleinformat.<\/p><p><\/p><p>SelbstverstÁ¤ndlich probieren wir einige kulinarische KÁ¶stlichkeiten und sind besonders von den Poffertjes angetan, einer traditionellen hollÁ¤ndischen SÁ¼ÁŸspeise, die kleinen, fluffigen Pfannkuchen Á¤hnelt und in einer speziellen Pfanne zubereitet wird. <\/p><p>Vor dem aufwÁ¤ndig restaurierten Nicolas Store sind Tische und StÁ¼hle aufgestellt, wo wir gemÁ¼tlich etwas trinken, der Musik zuhÁ¶ren und die Leute beobachten kÁ¶nnen.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Als besondere Áœberraschung haben die Organisatoren des Festivals eine Drohnenshow organisiert.
