Renting a car allowed us to go to places we would not have been able to otherwise, such as Arikok National Park, a beautiful national park that covers almost 20% of the island. Gorgeous views of Aruba's rugged terrain, desert-like hills filled with tall cacti, a breathtaking coastline and protected local flora and fauna awaited us. The roads are quite bumpy, but a 4×4 was only needed for one of the park's attractions, which we skipped as we were unable to get a jeep for the day we wanted to go.<\/p>
<\/p>
But we saw a variety of unique attractions and cultural heritage sites, including Quadirikiri Cave with its bat colonies and Fontein Cave with its original brownish-red Arawak rock paintings, unusual geological formations of lava, quartz, diorite and limestone, and Aruba's only natural freshwater pond, where we got a fish pedicure.<\/p>
<\/p>
To get out of the park, we took the dirt road along the coast, which was open to all types of vehicles, so we figured we'd be good to go. About two thirds of the way I was sure we had to turn around. In my opinion the big holes and big rocks made it impassable for a normal sedan. But I guess I underestimated Hans' super driving skills. How he got us over this "roadblock" without wrecking the car still blows my mind. My adrenaline level was through the roof and my palms were sweaty – for once not from the excessive heat.<\/p>
But at the end of the day we were able to return the rental car without any damage.<\/p>
<\/p>
Other highlights on the island were the Alto Vista Chapel, the Natural Bridge and the California Lighthouse. <\/p>
<\/p>
In 1750 Spanish missionaries built the Alto Vista Chapel which sits isolated on top of the cliffs near the ocean. Services are still held in this small yellow chapel, believed to be the first church built in the Caribbean.<\/p>
<\/p>
The Natural Bridge, formed over the centuries by the pounding sea, spanned more than 100 feet (30 meters) and stood 23 feet (7 meters) above sea level and was one of the largest of its kind in the world before it collapsed in September 2005. The remains were still impressive, a testament to the immeasurable forces of nature.<\/p>
<\/p>
One of Aruba's most famous landmarks, the California Lighthouse, stands tall on a limestone plateau near the Sasariwichi dunes on the northwestern tip of Aruba. It holds the distinction of being the tallest structure in Aruba. The lighthouse takes its name from a British steamship, the S.S. California, which sank in 1891, prior to the construction of the lighthouse (1914-1916), being the tallest structure in Aruba. The lighthouse takes its name from a British steamship, the S.S. California, which sank in 1891, prior to the construction of the lighthouse (1914-1916), which was built specifically to prevent similar tragedies. The remains of the S.S. California still provides one of the many dive sites around Aruba.<\/p>
<\/p>
Hooiberg is a distinctively shaped, 165 m (541 ft) conical hill located in the heart of the island of Aruba. To facilitate the maintenance of the radio and television transmitters at the top of the hill, a concrete staircase with 587 steps was built in three months.<\/p>
The result is a remarkable feat of engineering that has become a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike, rewarding the climb with great views of the island. Of course we climbed up sweating and would have been happy to find a pub to get a cold drink.<\/p>
<\/p>
As mentioned before, the beaches on the south side of Aruba are some of the cleanest, widest and most spectacular in the Caribbean, with turquoise waters and typically fine white sand.<\/p>
In stark contrast, the beaches on the wild, rocky coastline in the north and east of the island, where waves crash, foaming water pools at the bottom of the cliffs, and water sprays high into the air, are a wild and blue paradise for adventurous and daring kite and body surfers.<\/p>
<\/p>
Aruba is a good example of how a place does not have to have world famous attractions to be interesting, but that picking up the little gems along the way can be just as fascinating and rewarding, allowing a glimpse into the true "soul" of a country.<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p>
<\/p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Discover the Treasures of an Island – english Version<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
<\/p>
As mentioned before, Aruba is a small island and since we stayed for six weeks, we explored pretty much every corner of it either by foot or by car.
