Six hours into our trip, the wind had gusted up to 27 knots. An updated weather forecast showed winds stronger than expected, up to 40 knots, and heavy seas. Instead of trying to reach our original destination, we altered our course and went straight to Little Harbor in Newfoundland. There, we hunkered down in a secluded bay for the night. The weather had calmed down by the next morning, and we were able to resume our trip. After sailing and partly motoring for 117 nautical miles and experiencing dense fog and brilliant sunshine, we arrived in France on June 18.

Wait, what?

We postponed our departure by a day when we found out that Sailor’s Day, also known as the Fête des Marins, was on Sunday, June 21. This day honors lost seamen, so we thought it would be interesting to attend. We waited in front of the church for the procession to begin, and then we walked to the small park where wreaths were placed in memory of lost sailors. The parade made its way to the harbor, where a variety of boats of all kinds and sizes, some adorned with vibrant maritime flags, were already gathered for the blessing of the fleet.

After one last early trip to the bakery for baguettes and croissants for breakfast and lunch, and after saying goodbye to some of the other sailboat crews with whom we shared the dock (some of whom we would see again in the coming weeks), we moved on.
