Next stop on the itinerary: Cozumel. Cozumel is the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean, in fact the largest permanently inhabited island in Mexico, a destination that combines adventure and relaxation. The island is approximately 30 miles long and 9.9 miles wide, with a total area of 184.542 sq mi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cozumel ist nicht nur die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Insel der mexikanischen Karibik, sondern auch die gr\u00f6\u00dfte st\u00e4ndig bewohnte Insel Mexikos und ein Reiseziel, das Abenteuer und Erholung bietet. Die Insel ist ca. 48 km lang und 16 km breit und hat eine Gesamtfl\u00e4che von 477.961 km2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The island of Cozumel has two different sides: The west side is where the cruise ships dock, the ferry from Playa del Carmen arrives, and the beaches are populated with all-inclusive resorts.Unfortunately, we cannot see much of the coast because it is blocked by the many resorts until we get down to Punta Sur Eco Parque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cozumel hat zwei unterschiedliche Seiten: Auf der Westseite legen die Kreuzfahrtschiffe und die F\u00e4hre aus Playa del Carmen an, und die Str\u00e4nde sind mit All-Inclusive-Resorts \u00fcbers\u00e4t – leider sehen wir nicht viel von der K\u00fcste, da sie bis zum Punta Sur Eco Parque von den vielen Resorts verborgen ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punta Sur, or South Point, is located at the very bottom of the island and is home to a 247-acre ecological park. We take a guided boat tour through the Colombia Lagoon, where we see a variety of seabirds and even some crocodiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another highlight of our visit to Parque Punta Sur is the climb to the top of the Celarain Lighthouse (Faro Celarain). From this height (only 134 steps) we can see the different ecosystems of the park: the mangrove forest, the Columbia Lagoon, the south facing beaches, the coastal dunes and the reefs just off the coast. There is also a small Mayan archaeological site to explore and a small lighthouse museum, which includes information about shipwrecks, navigation tools, the lighthouse keepers, and much more about Cozumel\u2019s nautical navigation and maritime history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ein weiterer H\u00f6hepunkt unseres Besuches im Parque Punta Sur ist der Aufstieg auf den Leuchtturm von Celarain (Faro Celarain). Aus dieser H\u00f6he (nur 134 Stufen) k\u00f6nnen wir die verschiedenen \u00d6kosysteme des Parks \u00fcberblicken: den Mangrovenwald, die Lagune Columbia, die nach S\u00fcden ausgerichteten Str\u00e4nde, die K\u00fcstend\u00fcnen und die Riffe direkt vor der K\u00fcste. Au\u00dferdem gibt es eine kleine arch\u00e4ologische Ausgrabungsst\u00e4tte der Maya und ein kleines Schifffahrtsmuseum zu besichtigen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of this and access to a beautiful beach is included in the $24\/pp entrance fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eastern side of the island is undeveloped, with few roads other than the coastal road and only one hotel. But the coast offers the sound of the surf, the call of soaring seabirds and the breeze off the Caribbean, combined with stretches of rugged coastline and long stretches of white sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before returning to San Miguel, we stop at Se\u00f1or Iguanas, “the crazy beach bar at the crossroads”, known for its fresh seafood and the best margaritas on the island. We enjoy drinks, fish tacos, and the complimentary magnificent view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bevor wir nach San Miguel zur\u00fcckkehren, kehren wir im Se\u00f1or Iguanas ein, der \u201everr\u00fcckten Strandbar an der Kreuzung\u201c, die f\u00fcr ihre frischen Meeresfr\u00fcchte und die besten Margaritas der Insel bekannt ist. Wir genie\u00dfen Drinks, Fisch-Tacos und die tolle Aussicht, die es gratis dazu gibt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $20 daily rental fee for the scooter (after some serious haggling that would make a used car dealer jealous) was worth every penny. Not only did it give us the freedom to zoom around the island, but it also turned Hans into a two-wheeled daredevil again, and he loved every second of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die 20 Dollar Mietgeb\u00fchr f\u00fcr den Roller (nach einigem Feilschen, das jeden Gebrauchtwagenh\u00e4ndler vor Neid erblassen lassen w\u00fcrde) waren jeden Cent wert. Es hat uns nicht nur die Freiheit gegeben, \u00fcber die Insel zu d\u00fcsen, sondern es hat auch Hans wieder in einen Draufg\u00e4nger auf zwei R\u00e4dern verwandelt, und er hat jede Sekunde davon genossen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
