A Slice of Paradise

A slice of Paradise

When we started our trip to the Caribbean, we didn't really know what to expect. Yes, you think of white beaches, turquoise water, spectacular underwater life and palm trees, but we didn't realize how mountainous and densely forested some of the islands would be. And now we have come to a place that has it all! Carriacou!

The island of Carriacou is part of Grenada and is located in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, northeast of the island of Grenada. And what's more, it's all your Caribbean expectations rolled into one.

Our three boats dropped the hook in an anchorage at Hillsborough, giving us a great view of the mountainous Grenadine Islands to the north, the lushly overgrown hills of Carriacou to the east, and Sandy Island, a stretch of white sandy beach lined with palm trees, to the west. Absolutely gorgeous!

One evening we went to Paradise Beach Bar, a cruiser hangout about a 10 minute dinghy ride from our boat. A really nice place to enjoy a meal or just a drink – their rum punch was one of the best we have tasted so far. As the temperatures down here allow, the bar is open to at least two sides and you're surrounded by a nice breeze – so pleasant.

Every Wednesday they set up a table with pieces of wood and paint for cruisers to make their boat sign, which of course we did. MAKAAN is now enshrined on the north wall of the bar! So if you are ever there, take a look.

Walking around town we saw a sign on a house advertising the sale of roti on Fridays and Saturdays from noon until they are gone. Roti is a flat bread often served with soups and curries or as a wrap. In our case, it was the wrap variety, filled with a curry of goat meat, chickpeas and potatoes. A huge portion that filled us both up for about $5 – bones included. Ok, a piece of sweet watermelon from the next street vendor still fit in 🙂

Off Sandy Island is a large shallow reef just begging to be snorkeled. While we've seen nicer corals in other places, there were lots and lots of fish, including a HUGE school the likes of which we've only seen on TV.

As soon as our fingers started to prune, we went ashore and stretched out on the white sand, the palm leaves swaying gently in the breeze above us. We blinked through the sun's rays at the blue sky and realized (again) how lucky we are to enjoy this life on a boat that has brought us to this true slice of paradise.
