Getsemaní is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Cartagena de Indias, and is a place that every visitor should explore. This historic and more authentic neighborhood is full of colorful colonial houses, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and craft shops.

Once a poor and marginal neighborhood, it has experienced a cultural and tourist revival in recent years. Known for its vibrant art scene and nightlife, it is a popular place to stay for young and adventurous travelers – that would be us, of course!

Walking through the streets of Getsemani, we see a large number of murals and graffiti decorating the walls of houses. And they are beautiful! It is a feast of color for our eyes and a showcase of the talent and creativity of local artists. There is even a mural of Mirabel from the Disney movie Encanto, whose story is based in Colombia.

And for those who want to take home some souvenirs, the streets are also lined with artists selling their wares – beautiful paintings and lots of jewelry.

Getsemaní is a quiet neighborhood during the day, but it comes alive after dark. We often come here – after all, it is only a 12 minute walk from the marina – to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a cocktail. Happy hour lasts all night and most cocktails cost COP 20,000 for two, about $5.

We enjoy watching the locals sitting around a table, playing dominoes and being cheered on by the onlookers. It was also interesting to see how the supply chain works here. If they don’t have the ingredient for our cocktail, they call a guy who shows up 15 minutes later on a bicycle loaded with the alcohol in question.

A fun place to linger and people watch is Plaza de la Trinidad, a very popular spot for festivals and celebrations. On any given evening, locals and visitors gather to enjoy the sometimes breathtaking performances of various street performers while sipping a beer and munching on a variety of street food being offered.

In short, this is a vibrant and lively neighborhood in Cartagena de Indias that is so much fun to explore. Its culture, art, and nightlife definitely make it a unique and special place in the city.
